S5 are engaging well in a ‘forces’ topic in Science this term and really enjoying the sensory science experiments.

The pupils are going to cookery with Gail for a 6 week block to make snacks and meals which are easy to prepare – the sticky granola bars were devoured this week!

We are going to ‘coding club’ this term which puts children in control of the computer and lets them learn through experimentation, mastering concepts such as logic and consequences. It can also be a lot more fun than traditional ICT lessons, which typically revolve around using Word and PowerPoint. The pupils have been loving controlling robots, making devices change colour through iPad apps and engaging in problem solving devices.

S5 is a busy senior class with 10 pupils, made up of 3 girls and 7 boys. There are two job share teachers and 3 LSAs. S5 focus heavily on independent skills and preparing the children for the transition department. The pupils each have a weekly job to complete such as setting the break table, washing the dishes and preparing break foods. We do a lot of functional literacy and numeracy but also really enjoy a wide variety of national curricular subjects such as Science, Art, PE and Home Economics. We complete an Asdan accreditation and the pupils work really hard all year to achieve the work in each module. This term, we are learning about Forces in Science. The pupils have really been enjoying some practical experiments such as ‘bubbleology’ to demonstrate buoyancy and gravity in Science.
